His journey, spanning over four decades, is a testament to the grit and determination of immigrants who carve a path in a new land.
Reflecting on his early days in the United States, Ahuja recalls the challenges he faced as a young immigrant.
“I worked at a grocery store in New Orleans, Kmart, in the milking department of Albertson’s. The waiter, room service guy… all of those jobs paid decent enough to put me through college,” he says.
His humility and hard work laid the foundation for a remarkable career, proving that no role is too small when ambition drives you forward.
The lessons from his early struggles continue to shape his leadership today.
Standing by the 54-foot-deep channel where oil and petroleum vessels traverse Corpus Christi, he shares his vision for the port city: “As a commissioner, we look towards the path that the port is going and the path it has been, learn from history, and make sure that we have a strategic plan. We make sure that our finances are on the right path, and we work with our staff to shape policy for the future.”
Under his guidance, the port has expanded its infrastructure, including the construction of a new bridge that will allow larger ships to dock and enhance the city’s trade capacity. With Corpus Christi handling over three and a half to four million barrels of oil exports per day, Ahuja’s role is critical not only for the local economy but also for the global energy market.
Yet, despite the grandeur of his current position, Ahuja never forgets his roots.
He fondly remembers his childhood in Uttar Pradesh and the discipline and values instilled by his family. “Challenges in UP were… financial challenges, but we had a great life, great discipline in the house, education first, family first. Once you come here at that young age, you look forward. You always look forward to what tomorrow brings.”
