Dalit man assaulted for refusing to play drum

The incident exposes the deep-rooted prejudices and stereotypes that still exist among some sections of society, who consider Dalits as inferior and unworthy of respect. The fact that the accused was a temple committee director, who was supposed to ensure the smooth conduct of the pooja, makes the incident even more appalling and unacceptable. The assault also reflects the lack of awareness and sensitivity among some people about the constitutional and legal provisions that prohibit any form of discrimination and atrocities against Dalits and other marginalized groups.
