Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri submitted recommendations to PM Modi regarding the preservation and display of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji’s holy footwear (‘Jore Sahib’). The relics, safeguarded by the Puri family for centuries, were authenticated by the Ministry of Culture. PM Modi’s support for Sikh heritage is highlighted.

New Delhii: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, along with a committee of eminent members of the Sikh Sangat, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to submit recommendations regarding the preservation and public display of the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’, the holy footwear belonging to the founder of the Khalsa Panth, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, and his revered wife, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji.

The relics — comprising a right-foot footwear of Guru Gobind Singh Ji (11″ by 3½”) and a left-foot footwear of Mata Sahib Kaur Ji (9″ by 3″) — have been safeguarded by the Puri family for over three centuries. According to family tradition, Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself had bestowed the ‘Jore Sahib’ upon the family’s ancestor in recognition of his seva (service), ensuring the divine blessings of Guru Sahib and Mata Ji for generations to come.

“The Puri family has been immensely blessed and fortunate to perform seva of these holy relics from the time they were bestowed upon our ancestors by Guru Sahib and Mata Ji themselves more than 300 years ago,” Puri said.

The last custodian of the relics, Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri, lived in Karol Bagh, New Delhi, on a street later renamed ‘Guru Gobind Singh Marg’ to honour the sanctity of the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’. After his passing, his wife, Manpreet Kaur, requested Hardeep Singh Puri, being one of the eldest family members, to find a suitable permanent home where devotees could offer their obeisance.

With reverence, the relics were carefully examined by the Ministry of Culture, including carbon testing, to authenticate their historical and spiritual importance. Following this, a committee was formed to chart out recommendations for their preservation and befitting public display.

Puri, while handing over the committee’s report to PM Modi, highlighted the Prime Minister’s long-standing respect for Sikh traditions and his “unmatched affection” for the Sangat. He noted that PM Modi has consistently taken personal interest in enhancing Sikh religious centres, improving their accessibility, and safeguarding their heritage.

“PM Modi Ji has always expressed respect towards teachings of our Guru Sahibs and affection towards members of the Sikh Sangat. His compassionate and visionary leadership has reflected in several transformative decisions over the last eleven years,” Puri stated.

The recommendations, now with the Prime Minister, are expected to guide the final decision on where and how the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’ will be enshrined for the faithful to access and pay homage.
