Suman Kumari becomes BSF’s first woman sniper

Suman achieved the prestigious ‘instructor grade’ certification, which makes her eligible for deployment as a sniper instructor.

NEW DELHI: Sub-Inspector Suman Kumari has made history by becoming the first woman sniper of the Border Security Force (BSF), the force announced on Wednesday. She completed an intensive eight-week sniper course at the Central School of Weapons and Tactics (CSWT) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where she was the only female among 56 male participants.

The course is considered to be one of the toughest training of the force, comparable to commando training, and involves physical and mental challenges, as well as learning the skills and techniques of sniping. Suman achieved the prestigious ‘instructor grade’ certification, which makes her eligible for deployment as a sniper instructor.

Suman, who hails from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, joined BSF in 2021 and has proven herself capable in unarmed combat as well. She volunteered for the sniper course after observing the threat of sniper attacks from across the border while commanding a platoon in Punjab. Her superiors encouraged her to take up the challenge, and she showcased her determination and grit throughout the course.

Her instructors praised her exceptional performance, highlighting her physical and mental strength, as well as her willingness to learn and excel in challenging situations. Her peers and seniors also respected her for her perseverance and dedication.

Suman Kumari’s achievement not only reflects her dedication and resilience but also represents a significant step forward in promoting gender diversity and equality within the BSF. The force celebrated her accomplishment on social media, posting her pictures and calling her the ‘Mahila Sniper’ of BSF. She also received appreciation and congratulations from various quarters, including the media and the public.
