NEW DELHI: The Punjab Government has unveiled a landmark initiative to transform the state’s electricity infrastructure with the launch of the ₹5,000 crore ‘Roshan Punjab’ Mission.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal laid the foundation stone for the ambitious project in Jalandhar, promising uninterrupted, affordable, and safe electricity to every home, farm, and industry across Punjab.

Thousands attended the historic ceremony, which also saw participation from Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, Punjab Power Corporation officials, and local representatives.

This massive investment aims to make Punjab self-reliant in the energy sector and resolve long-standing issues of power cuts and voltage fluctuations caused by outdated equipment, weak transmission lines, and inadequate substations. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated, “Now, no factory in Punjab will shut down due to lack of electricity, no farmer will be troubled in the dark fields, and no child will be deprived of education because of a power outage.”

The mission prioritizes comprehensive repairs of power lines, upgrading dilapidated substations with modern technology, and installing new transmission and distribution networks in rural and urban areas. Safety measures include replacing dangerously dangling cables, installing modern weather-resistant meter boxes, and modernizing the 1912 helpline for faster grievance redressal, online tracking, and real-time updates.

Under the supervision of Punjab Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), the grid is being strengthened across 13 major cities including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Mansa, Sangrur, Moga, Hoshiarpur, and Pathankot. Smart metering systems, automated fault detection, and remote monitoring are being implemented to curb power theft, improve revenue collection, and enhance consumer services.

The ‘Roshan Punjab’ Mission also addresses economic development, ensuring long-term coal supply agreements with Coal India and other suppliers to reduce generation costs and provide subsidized electricity to farmers and small industries. These measures are expected to strengthen the rural economy, support industrial growth, attract investments, and create thousands of employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth.

For the first time in the state’s history, the government has combined grassroots feedback with policy-level reforms, engaging directly with Gram Panchayats, municipalities, industry associations, and farmer organizations to design a transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused electricity system. Online bill payments, mobile app complaint registration, and a single-window system for electricity connections will improve convenience and governance.

Transmission and distribution lines are being installed at safe heights on sturdy poles to prevent accidents during rainstorms and natural disasters. Tamper-proof, high-quality meter boxes will ensure accurate billing, increase reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and prolong the lifespan of electrical infrastructure.

The Punjab Government’s ‘Roshan Punjab’ Mission marks a historic step toward social, economic, and energy reforms. It promises a brighter future where every household is illuminated, every field receives consistent power, and industries thrive. The initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to transforming Punjab into one of India’s most developed and prosperous states, setting a model for other regions to follow.
