CHHINDWARA: In an exclusive conversation with The New Indian, veteran politician Kamal Nath shed light on the upcoming Madhya Pradesh elections, discussing his political journey, his commitment to the Gandhi family, and the key issues facing the state.

Rohan: Why do you think this fight is not between Rahul Gandhi or Prime Minister Modi anymore, but between you and the BJP?

Kamal: The contest is between the people of Madhya Pradesh and the BJP. The people are witnessing the state’s challenges – unemployment, farmers’ distress, and struggles of small traders. It is a collective stand by the people against the BJP.

Rohan: Many in the Congress and also outside the Congress used to feel that you have been a staunch Indira Gandhi loyalist who till date with your steely resolve has stood by the Gandhi family as many of the Doon School products which includes Jyotiraditya Sindhiya, RPN Singh, for that matter, Jatin Prasad, Captain Amrinder, Manpreet Badal, top five people who were from the Doon School, your alma mater, they have left. What is it that makes you someone standing in front of all these people?

Kamal: I joined politics with Sanjay Gandhi, who was in school with me, and it’s an affection with the family, and the family’s affection towards me which has strengthened the bond. So, it’s not just a political commitment it’s also a personal commitment.

Rohan: So, the Dosco club doesn’t seem to have been broken because of all these five people-Jyotiraditya Sindhiya, RPN Singh, for that matter, Jatin Prasad, Captain Amrinder, and Manpreet Badal

Kamal: All these people what they were pursuing it’s not my business. I know what I’m doing.

Rohan: With a history of significant portfolios, what brings you to the state Assembly to serve Madhya Pradesh?

Kamal: I was in the Centre being from Madhya Pradesh when I was given the responsibility of being the president here. I was here and for me, it is a pursuit of fulfilment, not just a pursuit of achievement. You may achieve something; you may become a minister but is that fulfilment? So, for me, it has been a question of pursuit of fulfilment.

Rohan: Your famous remark at the WTO about American farmers echoes in Madhya Pradesh elections. What does the essence of a farmer mean to you?

Kamal: Well, in the WTO, I just told the US that we’re looking for fair trade, not just free trade. And with the subsidies they give their farmers the Indian farmer cannot compete with the US Treasury. It can compete with the US farmers. That was the point I made. And when we talk of Madhya Pradesh, 70 per cent of our economy is agricultural based. Our 70 per cent are not farmers, but they are labourers, they are tractor drivers. So, they are connected with agriculture. It is a very crucial thing for the economy of Madhya Pradesh.

Rohan: Beating a political juggernaut like the BJP takes determination. What motivates you at the age of 74?

Kamal: My motivation lies in wanting to serve the state and free it from the BJP’s stranglehold. It is a pursuit of fulfilment.
