NEW DELHI: In a rapidly escalating conflict between India and Pakistan, the region has witnessed a series of aggressive military actions, raising questions about the true nature of the hostilities.
Is it a calculated and calibrated effort to achieve strategic objectives, or are the two nuclear-armed neighbours on the brink of a formal truce?
On the nights of May 08-09 and 09-10, Pakistan launched multi-vector attacks targeting over 26 locations across Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab, employing drones, UCAVs, artillery, and missiles.
IAF bases at Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur & Bhuj sustained limited damage. Civilian infrastructure, including Medicare centres and schools, also targeted by Pakistan.
In retaliation, India launched precision strikes on identified military targets in Pakistan, including Rafiqi, Chaklala, and Rahim Yar Khan et al.
The Indian Army neutralized multiple terrorist launchpads near the Line of Control (LoC) under Operation Sindoor, effectively crippling terror capabilities.
Diplomatic Blame Game
Both nations have accused each other of violating international norms. While India has dismissed Pakistan’s claims of destroying Indian military facilities, including IAF bases at Sirsa and Suratgarh, as propaganda, Pakistan has continued to allege cross-border violations.
In a recent interview, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif attempted to downplay nuclear concerns, stating, “The National Command Authority, the top military and civil body overseeing the country’s nuclear arsenal, has not held any meetings. Nor is any such meeting scheduled.” He added, “This thing that you have spoken about [nuclear option] is present, but let’s not talk about it – we should treat it as a very distant possibility, we shouldn’t even discuss it in the immediate context. Before we get to that point, I think temperatures will come down.”
Analysts are divided on whether this is a carefully calibrated conflict intended to extract diplomatic leverage or a prelude to a broader conflict.
Indian strategic circles believe that Pakistan’s actions are aimed at internationalizing the Kashmir issue once again, while Pakistan claims to be responding to Indian provocations.
Indian Defence Ministry sources have maintained that the country remains in a high state of operational readiness. While retaliatory strikes have been carefully targeted to avoid civilian casualties, any further escalation will be met with a proportional and decisive response.
Is a Truce Possible?
Diplomatic channels between New Delhi and Islamabad remain open but are strained. While international actors, including the United Nations, the United States, and the European Union, have urged both sides to exercise restraint, India has emphasized that de-escalation is only possible if Pakistan ceases its hostile activities.
The question remains—are the two nations engaged in a calibrated display of force, or is a truce deal silently being negotiated behind the scenes? Only time will tell.
