Changing Sides? Nitish To Meet Sonia On Friday

NEW DELHI: Are the winds of change blowing in Bihar?

Amid infighting in the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), sources told The New Indian that Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar spoke to Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi on Sunday evening.

A source in the Congress also said that the Bihar CM has sought time from Sonia Gandhi for a meeting.

When asked, if the Bihar Chief Minister spoke to Sonia Gandhi, a source in the Congress party said, “Senior leaders keep on speaking to each other, there is nothing new in it.”

He also said that Nitish Kumar, during his visit to Delhi on Friday, might also meet Sonia Gandhi.

The recent development has lent credibility to the rumours that JD-U is ditching its alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the state.

The Congress unit in Bihar also got into action as the party called a meeting of all its 19 MLAs in Patna to discuss the recent political developments in the state. Party Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Bihar in-charge Bhakta Charan Das have also reached the state.

The source, interestingly, also revealed that the party is keeping a close eye on its MLAs so that they don’t jump ship if Nitish Kumar snaps ties with the BJP in the state.

A JD-U source, meanwhile, said that Nitish Kumar wants to save the party as senior BJP leaders, along with former Union Minister RCP Singh and JD-U minister Ashok Chaudhary, are working together to break the party.

Singh resigned on Saturday after a show-cause notice was given to him over the allegations of amassing huge wealth between 2013 and 2022.

Chaudhary quit Congress in 2017 when Nitish Kumar decided to snap ties with the Grand Alliance and rejoin the NDA.

The JD-U source also disclosed that Nitish Kumar had come to know about the anti-party activities of Singh and Chaudhary. Following the revelations, JD-U national president Rajiv Ranjan aka Lalan Singh wants to forge an alliance with Congress and Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in the state to save the party.

The source also said that Lalan Singh had also held talks with RJD leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on the recent developments in the state.
