NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, showcasing a mix of seasoned politicians and notable celebrities, especially from the Bhojpuri film industry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to contest from Varanasi, while party president Amit Shah will enter the fray from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar. Adding a new face to the political landscape is Pawan Singh, a famous Bhojpuri actor and playback singer known for hits like ‘Lollipop Lagelu’ and ‘laal ghagra’. Singh, often referred to as the “Power Star of Bhojpuri Industry,” is set to make his political debut by contesting from West Bengal’s Asansol.  This move sets the stage for a gripping contest against veteran Bollywood and Bhojpuri actor Shatrughan Sinha, representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Manoj Tiwari, a well-known Bhojpuri singer-actor and two-time sitting MP from North East Delhi, is gearing up for his third consecutive run in the Lok Sabha elections. Tiwari’s strong presence in the national capital, coupled with his electoral track record, makes him a formidable force in the upcoming polls. Tiwari, also a former president of BJP’s Delhi unit, secured a significant victory in the 2019 polls, defeating former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Ravi Kishan, a popular actor and Bhojpuri film star, is set to contest once again from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur. Having secured victory in the 2019 polls against SP candidate Rambhual Nishad with a substantial lead, Kishan’s star power and political acumen make him a key player in the BJP’s electoral strategy for the region. Gorakhpur, once the bastion of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, remains a critical battleground. His political foray started in 2014 as a Congress candidate from Jaunpur, though he faced defeat at that time.

Dinesh Lal Yadav, alias Nirahua, another prominent Bhojpuri actor, is the sitting MP from Azamgarh and will seek re-election. His victory in the 2022 by-elections against Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav by nearly 9,000 votes, demonstrated his popularity in the constituency. Nirahua’s candidature emphasizes the BJP’s commitment to retaining strongholds and reinforcing its presence in Uttar Pradesh.
