NEW DELHI: The Delhi court today sent Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar, to four days of judicial custody in the alleged assault case involving AAP MP Swati Maliwal. Kumar will be produced before the court on May 28. His legal team has requested the preservation of CCTV footage from the incident.

Bibhav Kumar, a close aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was arrested by the Delhi Police last week. This came after Maliwal accused him of assaulting her at Kejriwal’s residence on May 13. She alleged that Kumar slapped and kicked her multiple times during her visit. Despite making two PCR calls, Maliwal has not yet filed a formal complaint.

Kumar’s lawyers have moved an application to secure the CCTV footage from the residence, arguing these recordings will prove his innocence. “These CCTVs prove my case. They have searched various times and have taken CCTV footage, how much footage they have we don’t know. We are seeking for the footage to be preserved,” Kumar’s counsel argued in court.

The additional public prosecutor countered, questioning the basis of the application and stating it was premature. “Under what provision has this application been moved? These prayers are not applicable at this stage as the matter is under investigation,” the prosecutor argued. The prosecutor also mentioned that the initial footage provided was blank and is now under expert examination.

Kumar has also filed a counter-complaint accusing Maliwal of unauthorized entry and verbal abuse and hinted at BJP involvement. In response, Maliwal reiterated her accusations, stating she was beaten and dragged by Kumar. The incident has sparked a significant political controversy, with AAP leaders rallying in support of Kejriwal and his family.

The police are conducting a thorough investigation, including forensic examination of Kumar’s phone and the CCTV footage from Kejriwal’s residence. The case has garnered widespread public and political attention, highlighting the tense political atmosphere between AAP and BJP.

Kumar, who has been closely associated with Kejriwal since before AAP’s formation, was previously terminated from his position by the Vigilance Department due to a pending criminal case. The ongoing investigation aims to establish a clear narrative from the conflicting accounts and ensure justice is served.
