Media needs to introspect: Vice President Dhankhar

NEW DELHI: A day after opposition parties announced boycott of more than a dozen anchors, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday advised the press to introspect and refrain from sensationalizing news stories.

Speaking to graduating journalism students at Makhanlal Chaturvedi University (MCU) in Bhopal, the Vice President called upon journalists to avoid covering news stories that portray India in a bad light.

Dhankhar awarded degrees to 450 Post Graduate students, including 24 PhD students at its fourth convocation ceremony in the presence of local BJP lawmaker Pragya Singh Thakur, state ministers Rajendra Shukla, and VC Prof KG Suresh.

Describing the press as ‘sentinel’, he told students that they were about to take up a “huge responsibility” of shaping the narrative about India.

VP Dhankhar implored students to be proud of their Indian heritage and always keep the national interest paramount while conducting their duties as a journalist.

He also listed India’s recent achievements such as successful G20 Summit, Chandrayaan-3’s soft-landing, Dhankhar said that India is in a leadership role in the global arena.

The Vice President was delighted to see students wearing the traditional attire representing different states of the country in an educational institute.

He said he was overwhelmed to see a glimpse of North, South, East and West in their attire and will always remember it while awarding degrees to the Post Graduate students, including PhD students, at the fourth convocation ceremony held at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Auditorium in MCU.
