NEW DELHI: President Donald Trump on Tuesday strongly criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for inaccurately stating that Trump had proposed a truce between Israel and Iran during the G7 summit in Canada. Trump dismissed the claim, asserting that Macron was misinformed and seeking attention.

Labeling Macron as a “spotlight-hungry president,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account, “Emmanuel Macron falsely claimed I left the G7 to push a ceasefire in the Middle East. Totally untrue! He has no clue why I’m returning to Washington. It’s far more serious than that. Whether by mistake or on purpose, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay tuned.”

The G7 summit, held in Alberta, Canada, saw Trump departing a day ahead of schedule, amid mounting instability in the Middle East. Speaking briefly before his departure, Trump said, “I need to get back. It’s very important.”

Earlier in the day, the White House released a statement explaining the change in schedule. “President Trump had a productive day at the G7, including finalizing a key trade agreement with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. While much was achieved, due to critical developments in the Middle East, President Trump will depart after dinner with world leaders,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

While Macron had suggested that Trump’s early departure was linked to brokering peace between Israel and Iran, Trump rejected the notion outright, hinting instead at a more complex and urgent reason for his return to Washington.

The disagreement between the two leaders added a tense undertone to the summit’s closing moments, even as the US secured a major trade breakthrough with the UK amidst broader discussions on global security and cooperation.
