NEW DELHI: As the INDIA alliance aligns in Mumbai, the central government gave an ire-inspiring gift to the opposition. Right when the opposition sought to plan for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, they were left to wonder about PM Narendra Modi’s next big step. The government has announced a five-day special session of the Parliament from the 18th to the 22nd of September, without disclosing the agenda behind it.

“Special Session of Parliament (13th Session of 17th Lok Sabha and 261st Session of Rajya Sabha) is being called from 18th to 22nd September having 5 sittings,” wrote parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on X, formerly Twitter.

This decision evoked a host of retorts from several INDIA alliance leaders. While speaking to The New Indian, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi played on the Hindu sentiments to attack the ruling dispensation. She pointed out that the special session starts on the auspicious day of the Hindu festival Ganesh Chaturthi.

“What is the hurry for a special session? The choice of date too, when a big Hindu festival like Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in every home of India just like Diwali is. I would say the hypocritical Hindus, election Hindus, and the ones who wear a mask of being Hindus, using it for political opportunity Hindus, the ones who give certificates of Hinduism are the ones who keep working against Hinduism. How can they call a special session without seeking the opinion of the Election Commission, the opposition, and non-BJP state governments.”

The announcement comes days after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s insistence that the Modi government could call the Lok Sabha elections before its schedule.

Congress alleged that the special sitting was an attempt to “control the news cycle” by the Modi government. On X, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the government was “managing the news cycle, Modi style”.

“1. News today has been dominated by latest revelations on the Modani-scam. 2. Tomorrow the ever-growing INDIA parties meet in Mumbai. How to counter? Announce a 5-day special session of Parliament when Monsoon session has just ended 3 weeks back,” he wrote.

The Congress leader said that the party will press for the formation of a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) to investigate allegations of corporate fraud by the Adani Group.

The last parliament session, the monsoon session, concluded on August 11 with a total of 17 sittings. It saw defining bills such as the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Bill and Digital Personal Data Protection Bill being passed without discussion amid opposition protests. The session witnessed massive protests and disruptions as opposition MPs demanded PM Modi’s statement over the Manipur riots. It also saw the no-confidence motion against the Modi government 2.0.
