NEW DELHI: China, Russia, and Iran are set to commence a joint naval exercise named ‘Security Belt-2025’ near Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port. The drills are scheduled to take place in early to mid-March, aiming to enhance mutual trust and pragmatic collaboration among the participating naval forces.
The ‘Security Belt-2025’ exercise will encompass a series of coordinated naval operations, including:
- Maritime Target Strikes: Simulated attacks on designated sea-based targets to improve offensive and defensive maritime strategies.
- Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS): Training in boarding and securing vessels, a critical skill in counter-piracy and maritime security operations.
- Damage Control: Exercises focused on managing and mitigating damage to naval vessels during combat scenarios.
- Joint Search and Rescue Operations: Coordinated efforts to locate and assist vessels or personnel in distress at sea.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy will participate with a destroyer and a supply ship, reflecting its commitment to the exercise.
Chabahar Port, located along the Gulf of Oman, serves as a vital maritime hub, providing direct access to the Indian Ocean and facilitating significant international trade routes. The collaborative naval exercises underscore the trio’s commitment to ensuring maritime security and stability in this strategically important region.
This upcoming drill marks the fifth instance since 2019 where China, Russia, and Iran have engaged in joint naval exercises, signifying a deepening of military ties and a shared interest in safeguarding regional maritime interests.
China’s Ministry of National Defense emphasized that the exercise aims to “strengthen military mutual trust and foster pragmatic cooperation among the naval forces of the participating countries.โ
