Schools shut in Rajasthan amid Rising Indo-Pak Border tensions

Summary

Amid rising Indo-Pak tensions following India’s Operation Sindoor, schools in Rajasthan’s border districts have been shut, with high alert in place to ensure public safety.

NEW DELHI:ย Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following India’s military operation “Sindoor” on May 7, 2025, which targeted alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the Rajasthan government has ordered the closure of schools in its border districts.

In response to the rising threat of cross-border tensions, educational institutions in four key border districtsโ€”Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Barmerโ€”will remain closed for an indefinite period, with immediate effect. The decision comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of students and staff in the region.

This action follows similar measures in Punjab, where schools in six border districts, including Ferozepur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, and Tarn Taran, have also been closed. In Pathankot, the shutdown will last for 72 hours, while schools in Tarn Taran will remain shut until May 11.

High Alert Across Borders

The situation remains volatile, with both India and Pakistan reporting casualties due to cross-border shelling and airstrikes. While the “Sindoor” operation aimed at eliminating terrorist infrastructure, the fallout has led to severe security measures across northern and north-western India. The closure of schools is one of the many safety protocols put in place to protect the citizens of border states.

In addition to the school closures, at least 21 airports across northern India have been temporarily shut down due to security concerns. The shutdowns will continue until May 10, with officials stressing that they will remain vigilant and prepared for any further developments.

State Security Measures

The Rajasthan Police has been placed on high alert, with additional personnel deployed along the border to prevent any untoward incidents. The state government has also canceled the leaves of all police personnel and administrative officers in the affected areas.

Authorities are urging citizens in affected regions to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly near border areas. Schools have been advised to conduct online classes where feasible to ensure that education continues uninterrupted during the ongoing security measures.

The nation remains on high alert, and the government has assured the public that the security forces are prepared to deal with any eventualities arising from the situation. As of now, both states have assured that further announcements regarding the resumption of normal activities, including the reopening of schools, will be made as the situation evolves.
