NEW DELHI: In a video admission, wrestler Sakshi Malik and her husband Satyawart Kadian have highlighted the role of Satyapal Malik — a former governor who had a strained relationship with Prime Minister Modi and accused Defense Minister Rajnath Singh of insufficient action in the Pulwama incident —  in the recent escalation of the wrestlers’ protests.

They expressed their appreciation to Satyapal Malik for supporting and guiding them to express their demands fearlessly. “We thank Satyapal Malik for his unwavering support and for showing us how to fearlessly voice our demands,” they stated in the video.

In April, Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik stood firmly by the wrestlers protesting against wrestling body chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh amid sexual harassment allegations. He affirmed that, akin to the government apologizing to farmers following their agitation, they would regret their actions against wrestlers and offer them an apology.

Throughout his tenure as governor, Satyapal Malik experienced multiple transfers, being moved four times in less than four years and even assuming an additional charge in Odisha.

His appointments included Bihar in 2017, followed by Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, where he held “political meetings” without apparent approval from the central government. Satyapal Malik served as the 10th and final Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, during which the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir took place on August 5, 2019.

He was then transferred to Goa, where he clashed with the BJP-led government under Pramod Sawant. Finally, he was transferred to Meghalaya, where he served from November 3, 2019, to August 18, 2020.

During his time in office, Satyapal Malik consistently expressed opposition to the government on various issues. He strongly criticized the Modi government’s handling of the farmers’ protests against the three farm bills passed in Parliament in 2020.

In addition, in a controversial interview, he made claims regarding the Pulwama attack, asserting that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections were “fought on the bodies of our soldiers” and suggesting that the then Home Minister would have had to resigned if a thorough investigation had been conducted. He stated that he had immediately informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the attack but was instructed to remain silent.
