New Delhi: Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab is spearheading a digital revolution in education, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into government schools to prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world. This initiative is designed not just to modernize classrooms but to transform students from job seekers into job creators.

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) is developing a comprehensive AI curriculum for Classes 6 to 12, covering AI ethics, coding, robotics, data literacy, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students will benefit from project-based learning, digital tools, workbooks, and co-curricular activities including AI hackathons, coding competitions, and science fairs, with materials available in both English and Punjabi.

Teachers are also being prepared for this digital shift through a blended training program combining online modules and in-person workshops. Educators will receive basic and advanced training, learn modern teaching methods focusing on project-based and inquiry-based learning, and earn certificates along with periodic refresher courses to stay updated in AI education.

Punjab boasts one of the strongest digital infrastructures in the country. Out of 19,243 government schools, 18,391 have functioning computers—a 95.6% coverage rate, among the highest nationwide. Nearly 17,150 schools (89.1%) are equipped with smart classrooms featuring digital boards, virtual classrooms, and smart TVs. Laptop availability stands at 9.8%, far ahead of Haryana (2.1%) and Himachal Pradesh (1.9%). This digital readiness ensures smooth adoption of AI education across the state.

The initiative will be implemented over the next three years, with selected schools offering students practical, project-based learning supported by software, digital platforms, and Learning Management Systems (LMS). These programs aim to enhance innovation, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities among students.

“This initiative is about more than technology; it is about empowering youth and creating opportunities,” the government stated. By integrating AI into schools, Punjab is ensuring that development is no longer limited to infrastructure but also includes educational and technological empowerment, preparing students to take the state forward on the global stage.
