NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday embarked on a landmark five-nation diplomatic tour aimed at deepening India’s engagement with the Global South and advancing the agenda of BRICS. The week-long visit, from July 2 to 9, will take the Prime Minister to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi said the visit reflects India’s commitment to creating a “peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order.” He emphasised that India, as a founding member, views BRICS as a vital platform for collaboration among emerging economies.
“I am confident that my visits to the five countries will reinforce our bonds of friendship across the Global South, strengthen our partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic and deepen engagements in multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM,” Modi said in his official statement.
Ghana (July 2–3)
In the first leg of the tour, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Nana Akufo-Addo in Ghana. He is also scheduled to address the Parliament of Ghana, highlighting areas such as investment, energy, health, security, capacity building, and development partnerships.
“Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and ECOWAS,” Modi stated.
Trinidad and Tobago
PM Modi’s next stop will be Trinidad and Tobago, where he will be hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The visit coincides with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian indentured labourers, making it a moment of cultural and historical resonance.
“This visit will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship that unite us,” he said.
Argentina
Marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, Modi will meet with President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires. The leaders will explore enhanced cooperation in agriculture, energy, critical minerals, tourism, trade, and technology.
“Argentina is a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator in the G20,” PM Modi noted.
Brazil – BRICS Summit in Rio
In Brazil, PM Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6–7, where he is expected to hold multiple bilateral meetings on the sidelines. Following the summit, he will proceed to Brasília for a State Visit, engaging with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“This visit will provide an opportunity to strengthen our close partnership with Brazil and work with my friend President Lula on advancing the priorities of the Global South,” Modi said.
Namibia
On his return journey, Modi will stop in Namibia, a country India supported during its decolonisation struggle. He will meet with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and address the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament.
“It will be a privilege to celebrate our enduring solidarity and shared commitment for freedom and development,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s tour underscores India’s renewed outreach to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, with a focus on strategic cooperation in multilateral forums such as BRICS, AU, ECOWAS, and CARICOM. The visit also comes at a time when India is actively pushing for reform of global institutions to reflect the aspirations of the developing world.
