Bumrah Key for 2nd Test as India Trail 0–1: Mark Butcher

Summary

With India trailing 0–1 in the series, former England batter Mark Butcher insists Jasprit Bumrah must play the 2nd Test at Edgbaston, putting team needs above rotation plans.

NEW DELHI: As India gear up to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2, the biggest point of contention remains the inclusion of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. With the visitors trailing 0–1 in the five-match series, experts and fans alike are urging Team India to field their premier fast bowler despite pre-decided workload management plans.

Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast, former England batter Mark Butcher made a compelling case for Bumrah’s participation in the must-win Test match.

Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches. I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays,” Butcher said, stressing the need to prioritize the series over personal milestones.

Bumrah, who bowled with characteristic precision in the first Test, is reportedly fit and available. However, India’s coaching staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, had outlined a rotation strategy before the series, with Bumrah expected to play only three out of five Tests. The plan was largely aimed at preserving his fitness across a long and physically demanding tour.

Butcher, however, believes those plans need revision in light of the series situation. “I know he wants to play at Lord’s, but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord’s,” he added. “And who knows, he might get through this one okay and be fine for Lord’s, and then you take your chances at the back-end.”

Arshdeep or Kuldeep in the Mix?

The former England batter also weighed in on India’s possible bowling combination, especially after a lacklustre performance by Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur at Headingley.

“A left-arm swing bowler is also perhaps an option,” Butcher said, hinting at Arshdeep Singh as a possible inclusion. “If Arshdeep comes in… I think Prasidh Krishna was found wanting.” He also recommended spinner Kuldeep Yadav as a viable replacement to add variation alongside Jadeja and Siraj, while also subtly questioning Thakur’s utility.

“I couldn’t see how Shardul was going to make enough runs to make up for his lack of potency with the ball,” Butcher noted. This opens the door for India to potentially go with Siraj, Bumrah, Arshdeep, Kuldeep, and Jadeja as their five frontline bowlers.

Final Call Awaited

While India’s captain Shubman Gill and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate have confirmed that Bumrah is available and fit, the final playing XI will only be confirmed after pitch and weather assessments in Birmingham. Rain is expected to play a role across the five days, adding further complexity to India’s selection puzzle.

Regardless of the team composition, one thing is clear: India need Jasprit Bumrah now more than ever, and any decision to rest him could make or break their hopes of leveling the series.
