NEW DELHI: After 92 MPs were suspended from the Parliament in total during the Winter Session, another pitfall has come in the form of another 49 Lok Sabha Opposition MPs being suspended on Tuesday.

This development has come at a time when the members of the INDIA alliance have found themselves at the forefront, demanding Home Minister Amit Shah’s presence in the lower house. To put matters into perspective, their demand has been put to the fore owing to the security breach that put an air of dread across the halls of the Lok Sabha on the 22nd anniversary of the Parliament Attacks.

Of the notable MPs, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP, Supriya Sule, National Conference (JKNC) MP, Farooq Abdullah, former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP, Danish Ali, Congress MPs Manish Tewari, Karti Chidambaram and Shashi Tharoor, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sudip Bandhopadhyay, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP, Sushil Kumar Rinku, and Samajwadi Party (SP) MP, Dimple Yadav, received the boot from the lower house Speaker.

Earlier on Monday, 47 MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha. On the other hand, Rajya Sabha also witnessed an expansive ouster with over 45 MPs suspended.

Tharoor highlighted that the ouster was being made to have an Opposition free Bharat. “It is clear that they want an Opposition-mukt Lok Sabha and they will do something similar in Rajya Sabha. At this point, unfortunately, we have to start writing obituaries for Parliamentary democracy in India.”

He further added that the suspensions would enable the incumbent government to pass Bills without discussion. “Today, in solidarity with my colleagues, I too joined the protest and everybody who was present has been suspended for the rest of the session which means they want to pass their Bills without any discussion. I think it is a betrayal of Parliamentary democracy,” he added.

Presently, 141 MPs from both the Houses have been ousted, excluding disqualified TMC MP, Mahua Moitra.
