Oman Sultan receives warm welcome in India, engages in talks with PM Modi

President and PM extended a warm reception to the Sultan of Oman at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

NEW DELHI: The Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tarik, was warmly welcomed with a ceremonial reception by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday.

This development took place when the Sultan arrived in India on a three-day visit on Friday. Upon his arrival at the President’s residence, he was received by Union Minister of State V Muraleedharan.

Upon arrival, Tarik was presented with a Guard of Honour by the combined defence personnel from both countries. Subsequently, PM Modi hosted a luncheon in honour of the Sultan at the Hyderabad House during the bilateral talk.

Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), emphasised the significance of the visit in reinforcing the relationship between both countries. Bagchi shared the warm welcome on microblogging site X, stating, “The visit will further reinforce the longstanding friendship and cooperation between India & Oman and strengthen bilateral ties.”

The Sultan’s visit is considered a milestone in diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Muscat, with India and Oman sharing deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic ties. Established in 1955, diplomatic relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2008.

In a gesture of diplomatic camaraderie, India extended a special invitation to Oman to participate in the G20 Summit and associated meetings as a guest country under India’s G20 Presidency. Oman actively engaged in over 150 working group meetings, with nine of its ministers participating in various G20 ministerial meetings, showcasing the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
