SRINAGAR: “My child became an orphan even before being born,” said the grief-stricken widow of Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani, who died in Delhi on Thursday, 39 days after he suffered critical wounds in a terrorist attack while he was playing cricket in Eidgah Srinagar.

Masroor, 34, was shot by a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist on October 29 while he was playing cricket with his friends at Eidgah.

Women were seen wailing and shrieks filled the air as Masroor’s coffin came out of the ambulance at his residence.

While talking to The New Indian, Masroor’s uncle Ghulam Mohammad Wani said, “Masroor’s health had deteriorated due to a severe chest infection. Initially, he was admitted to SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar, but was later shifted to Paras Hospital for further treatment from where he was flown to AIIMS in Delhi on Wednesday.”

While talking to The New Indian, Inspector Masroor’s father Ali Mohammad Wani, who is himself a retired Sub Inspector of J&K Police, said “I am proud of my son who always stood for the voice of the voiceless.” He demanded that the killers be brought to justice at the earliest. Relatives and acquaintances of Masroor said that he was a very compassionate human being who always assisted others.

Terming Wani as a courageous officer who valiantly served amid the looming threat of terrorism, Director General of Police J&K Rashmi Ranjan Swain said, “Masroor’s sacrifice embodies the harsh reality that our JK police personnel face, dedicating their lives to shield our communities from the shadows of terrorism”.

The DGP has said that Inspector Wani’s tragic sacrifice reminds us of the immense challenges our personnel encounter daily, even in moments of leisure. He stated that it is a grim reminder of the perils faced by our brave personnel while safeguarding the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

While talking to reporters on the sidelines of the wreath-laying ceremony, Additional Director General of Police Law & Order J&K Vijay Kumar (IPS) said, “We have got several leads about those involved in the killing of Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani and fresh Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been ordered to prevent these types of attacks on police officers and jawans.”

The J&K Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) are jointly investigating this case. “We have also got some leads about the attackers,” Vijay Kumar said, adding that investigating agencies had input about the attack on police. “Sometimes mistakes do take place and we lose an officer.”

ADGP Vijay Kumar said that last year the police had formulated SOPs for officials and police personnel and asked them to follow precautions whenever they go on leave or visit their families or on duty. “Now fresh orders have been issued and foolproof arrangements will be made as we don’t want a repeat of the incidents in which we lost one of our officers,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Union government informed Parliament that 20 security personnel were killed in the line of duty in terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir this year. On October 31, a Police Head constable Ghulam Ahmad Dar was shot dead by terrorists near his house in North Kashmir’s Tangmarg area in Baramulla.
