SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested five terrorists involved in the murder of circus worker Deepu, who was tragically shot dead in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir last month.

Police have also recovered the weapon used to kill the Hindu man, who was shot dead when he stepped out of an amusement park to buy milk near Jagland Mandi in Anantnag on May 29.

In a press conference, deputy inspector general (DIG), South Kashmir range, Muhammad Rayees Bhat, highlighted the meticulous efforts undertaken to crack the case. “On May 29 this year, at approximately 9:15 pm, terrorists targeted and fatally shot a laborer from Udhampur in the main town of Anantnag,” he stated.

Deepak Kumar or Deepu was rushed to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag by the park’s laborers, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“After the killing of Deepu, the terrorists fled the scene,” said Bhat. He further shared that an FIR (First Information Report) was registered under relevant sections of the law, and an investigation was initiated.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by the DPO Anantnag to lead the probe, and comprehensive analysis of technical, human, and scientific evidence was conducted. Additionally, thorough searches were conducted to apprehend the accused terrorists, leading to the recovery of empty cartridges at the crime scene.

The DIG revealed that two individuals from Deva Colony, Sehran Bashir Nada and Ubaid Nazir Laigroo, had gone missing. The investigation team examined their case and analyzed both technical and human data, enabling them to reconstruct the sequence of events.

On June 6, the Anantnag police, during a Naka Checking operation at Semthan-Tulkhan Crossing, apprehended two suspicious individuals.

The disclosure made by the detained individuals proved to be a major breakthrough in the case, as it allowed the identification of the accused persons involved in Deepu’s murder. Subsequent analysis of scientific and technical data led to the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and a scooter bearing registration number JK03M 0442, which was used during the crime.
