NEW DELHI: Jairam Ramesh, the Congress spokesperson, has replied fiercely to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address condemning the opposition and Lok Sabha Speaker elections. Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of hypocrisy, emphasising the importance of consensus over confrontation and constructive discussion over disruption.

He also criticised the Prime Minister for opposing the contest for the Lok Sabha Speaker and wrote on X, “Barely 24 hours after his hypocrisy-laden pravachan on consensus and cooperation, the non-biological PM has made a contest for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker inevitable,”. He added that this year’s polls are a “personal, political, and moral” defeat for Modi.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on Tuesday, June 24, with newly elected members, including, taking the oath in the presence of PM Modi. As the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha, BJP lawmaker Bhartruhari Mahtab took the oath presented by President Droupadi Murmu.

Previously, in his speech at the ceremony, PM Modi asked the opposition to match the people’s expectations by focusing on substance over slogans and maintaining the dignity of democracy. In his address, he suggested that the common people of the country expect the opposition to take positive steps and live up to their expectations.

He also added that he hopes that the opposition will preserve the dignity of democracy. He also declared June 25th as the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and a “black spot” in India’s democracy when the Constitution was repealed. He said that citizens don’t desire drama or disturbance instead they want substance, not slogans in the form of a good, responsible opposition, and then he also claimed to show confidence over the newly elected MPs to sit well in these expectations.

The oath-taking ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 24 with the start of the first session of the Lok Sabha. This time the Parliament saw a different picture of the newly appointed MPs taking oath as the election result surprised everyone with the INDIA bloc garnering 234 seats
