The controversy started when Shami’s ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, posted a picture of Ayra covered in Holi colours on Instagram. The post invited hateful comments from radical elements questioning Ayra’s upbringing.

A person named Junaid commented, โ€œDid you read Jumme ki namaaz first or later?โ€ Another wrote, “It is the month of Ramzaan, shame on you.”

Cleric Calls Shami a Criminal

Earlier this month, Islamists Attack Shami’s Daughter for taking an energy drink during the Champions Trophy while fasting. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, called him a “criminal” for not observing Roza during Ramzaan.

The Maulana stated, “If someone skips Roza intentionally, they are a criminal. Shami has committed a big crime.”

Razvi also commented on Shami’s daughter celebrating Holi, stating:

“She is a small girlโ€”if she plays Holi without understanding (it), then it is not a crime. If she is sensible and still plays Holi, then it will be considered against Shariat.”

Razvi further advised Shami and his family:

“I have appealed to Shami and his family membersโ€”whatever is not in Shariat, do not let your children do it. Holi is a very big festival for Hindus, but Muslims should avoid celebrating Holi. If someone celebrates Holi even after knowing Shariat, it is a crime.”

Previously, during the ICC Champions Trophy, Shami faced backlash for not fasting during Ramzaan, as he was seen drinking water during a match against Australia. Razvi remarked:

“In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He should not have done this at all.”

He also emphasized the importance of observing fasts:

“It is the responsibility of all Muslims to follow the rules of Shariat. Fasting is obligatory in Islam. If a person does not intentionally keep a fast, he is considered a sinner, according to Islamic law.”

Despite these criticisms, Razvi congratulated the Indian cricket team and Shami for their success in the Champions Trophy, saying:

“I congratulate Team India’s captain, all the players, and Mohammad Shami from the bottom of my heart on their success.”

Ongoing Attacks on Celebrities

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Earlier, Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan faced online harassment for celebrating Hindu festivals.

Critics often accuse public figures of disrespecting religious customs. However, incidents like these highlight rising intolerance in online spaces.

Pluralism Under Threat

Despite India’s rich tradition of cultural harmony, extremists frequently target individuals embracing diverse customs. The ongoing harassment of Shami and his family reflects this pattern.

The targeting of Shami’s Daughter over Holi celebrations highlights a growing need for promoting peace and respect for cultural diversity in India.
