NEW DELHI: Ishan Kishan scored a half-ton as wobbly Indian batting survived some anxious moments to record a five-wicket win over a hapless West Indies in the first ODI in Bridgetown.

Chasing 115 to win, following impressive bowling from left-arm spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, India posted 118 in 22.5 overs, losing five wickets in the process.

With skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli deciding to drop down the order, Indian batters too found the going tough on a spin-friendly wicket – and against the left-arm spin of Gudakesh Motie.

While Motie scalped Suryakumar Yadav and later added Kishan to his kitty, it was too small a total to defend.

Kishan top-scored with a 46-ball 52, which saw seven fours and a six, but it took the experience of Jadeja (16*, 21b, 1×4) and Sharma (12*, 19b, 2×4), who came at no. 7, to help India cross the line.

Earlier, the West Indies faced a challenging trial against India, succumbing to a dismal collapse of 114 runs in 23 overs during the opening ODI.

Jadeja and Yadav joined forces, claiming seven wickets as the West Indies lost seven wickets for just 26 runs in a mere 44 balls, leading to a crushing defeat.

This marked the West Indies’ second-lowest ODI total against India and their third-lowest at home.

India handed Mukesh Kumar his ODI debut, and just like his debut days a couple of days ago, he started his journey with a maiden over. But it was Hardik Pandya who gave India the breakthrough with the wicket of Kyle Mayers.

The West Indies struggled against the pace and bounce of the Indian bowlers, making it challenging to score runs.

Alick Athanaze, in his second ODI appearance, showed promise with an impressive display of Caribbean flair, hitting a stylish flick over a deep square leg and a flourishing cover drive. However, he fell victim to a seemingly innocuous delivery from Mukesh, handing the bowler his maiden ODI wicket. Soon after, Shardul Thakur rattled Brandon King’s stumps with a sharp delivery, further adding to the West Indies’ woes.

Shimron Hetmyer, returning to ODIs after nearly a year, settled in comfortably with skipper Shai Hope, forming a 43-run partnership. As the duo steadily built the score, it seemed like smooth sailing for the West Indies.

However, the fortunes quickly turned as Jadeja found his rhythm, becoming nearly unplayable. Hetmyer’s adventurous approach backfired as he attempted an unwarranted scoop, only to be bowled behind his legs. Jadeja then dismissed Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd in quick succession, leaving the West Indies batting lineup in disarray.

Yadav joined the party, striking with a deceiving wrong’un that trapped Dominic Drakes in front of the stumps. Yannic Carriah followed suit, falling victim to Kuldeep in a similar manner.

As the wickets fell around him, Hope valiantly stood at the crease, but even he couldn’t withstand the pressure. Kuldeep claimed his third victim, dismissing Hope with a well-judged reverse sweep that resulted in an LBW decision.

With the tailenders exposed, the West Indies collapsed further, eventually reaching a meagre 114 runs. Kuldeep completed an impressive four-wicket haul, while Jadeja contributed three wickets.

BRIEF SCORES: West Indies 114 in 23 overs (Shai Hope 43, Alick Athanaze 22; Kuldeep Yadav 4/6, Ravindra Jadeja 3/37) lost to India 118/5 in 22.5 overs (Ishan Kishan 52*; Gudakesh Motie 2/26) by five wickets
