New Delhi: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced a major milestone in India’s maritime and scientific capabilities as Kolkata’s GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers) signed an MoU with Norway’s Kongsberg to develop India’s first indigenous Polar Research Vessel (PRV).
Polar Research Vessel
The advanced vessel, designed for polar and ocean research, will support the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) in studying climate change, marine ecosystems, and unexplored regions of the Arctic and Antarctic.
Sonowal described the project as a testament to India’s commitment to scientific innovation and sustainable development under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The PRV will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, enhancing India’s role in global environmental research.
During his visit to Norway, the minister also participated in high-level discussions on sustainable shipping, reiterating India’s vision of ‘MAHASAGAR’—a framework for mutual growth and security in maritime cooperation. He invited Norwegian investors to explore opportunities in India’s expanding maritime sector, highlighting initiatives like Sagarmala 2.0 and green port projects.
The collaboration marks a significant step in India-Norway ties, with GRSE leveraging Kongsberg’s expertise in ship design while strengthening domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The project aligns with India’s goal of becoming a global leader in maritime technology and climate-resilient research.
