New Delhi: Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh has stirred fresh controversy after wearing an outfit featuring a printed map that social media users are calling a “Khalistani map” at Monday’s Met Gala in New York.
This year’s Met Gala theme was “Tailored for You” – celebrating suiting and menswear featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s accompanying exhibition. The annual fashion extravaganza attracts global icons from film, fashion, and music.
The image of Dosanjh’s outfit went viral, with many accusing the artist of being a “puppet of Khalistani separatists.” The controversy centers on a map printed on the back of his designer outfit by Prabal Gurung, which some claim represents Khalistan. The ambiguous geographical depiction includes several Punjabi script letters.
“Diljit Dosanjh wearing a dress that shows the map of Khalistan. He can never be patriotic to India,” wrote Vikram Pratap Singh in a post on X. When contacted, Singh declined further comment, stating he had “said what he wanted on X,” while affirming “I stand with India and will do everything to help my country.”
As of press time, neither Dosanjh nor designer Prabal Gurung have responded to the growing social media backlash regarding the alleged map. The outfit was part of Dosanjh’s high-profile appearance at the fashion world’s most exclusive event.
