AAP blames BJP for delay in appointment of Delhi mayor
Complaining delay in the appointment of the mayor of Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on January 28 staged a ‘padayatra’ in all 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital.
The party also alleged that it is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that is delaying the election of the Delhi mayor.
Through the ‘padayatra’, AAP aimed to showcase how the BJP is “hindering” the democratic process by obstructing the smooth functioning of the MCD House and preventing the mayor’s election from taking place.
AAP leaders have accused the BJP of “using hooliganism” and “conspiring to stop the election” twice since the party won the MCD elections.
AAP also said that the delay is not only an insult to the mandate of the two crore people of Delhi but also a waste of their time. The party also alleged that the BJP does not want an AAP mayor in Delhi because they do not want work done and for Delhi to become garbage free.
“Troubled by the BJP’s mismanagement of MCD for 15 years, the people of Delhi have now given a majority to the Aam Aadmi Party in the MCD elections. However, the BJP is unable to accept the people’s mandate,” AAP MLA and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak said.
“They are determined to keep the MCD under their control at any cost. This is the reason why, despite the results of the MCD elections having been announced over a month ago, the BJP continues to obstruct the formation of an AAP government and the appointment of an AAP mayor,” Pathak alleged.
He added that the MCD House has been called twice for the mayor’s election, but the BJP continues to obstruct the process by creating chaos and resorting to hooliganism.
“We consider this act to be both shameful and disrespectful to the people’s verdict. The Aam Aadmi Party will not tolerate this behaviour from the BJP. In response, party leaders and workers organised ‘padayatras’ in all legislative assemblies of Delhi to raise awareness about the BJP’s hooliganism and to protest against it,” Pathak said.
“Our message to the BJP is clear: do not deprive Delhi of its rightful mayor. We implored the BJP to allow the mayor’s election to take place and respect the will of the people,” Pathak added.
Meanwhile, AAP Leader Adil Ahmed Khan alleged that the BJP was insulting people’s decisions. “I urge the BJP to respect the decision of the people of Delhi and allow the Aam Aadmi Party to elect its mayor. The BJP is insulting the mandate given by the two crore people of Delhi and attempting to undermine democracy by preventing the election from taking place,” he said.
“The BJP does not want a mayor in Delhi because they do not want the city to be free of garbage, or for development and construction of roads and drains, which fall under the purview of the MCD, to take place,” said Khan.
