NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident in Bihar’s Begusarai district, a Sub Inspector (SI) lost his life, while another officer sustained severe injuries after liquor smugglers attacked the police team. The incident unfolded during the late hours of Tuesday when a police team, led by SI Khamas Chaudhary, approached a vehicle suspected of carrying illicit liquor.

According to reports, the police received information about a four-wheeler attempting to smuggle alcohol in an Alto car from Chhatauna village. Responding to the tip-off, a five-member police team, led by SI Chaudhary, was deployed to intercept the liquor smuggling operation. However, instead of complying, the unidentified smugglers accelerated the vehicle, resulting in a tragic turn of events.

The speeding car collided with SI Chaudhary, causing him to fall onto a stone and succumb to his injuries. Another Home Guard personnel also suffered injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. The district police officers, including SDPO Bakhti, CI Bakhti, and SHO Navkothi, swiftly responded to the scene.

In the aftermath, a special team led by SDPO Bakhti was formed, resulting in the arrest of the Alto car owner. The police are actively interrogating the owner to gather more information about the incident.

SP Yogendra Kumar confirmed the tragic demise of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Khamas Chaudhary, who bravely attempted to apprehend the liquor smugglers. Following the incident, a police team, under the leadership of DSP Bakhti, launched raids to apprehend the driver of the Alto car. The latest updates reveal that the police have successfully arrested the owner of the Alto car and are currently questioning him.

Bihar finds itself among the top six states in the country in terms of cases involving injured police personnel, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2022. With 68 reported cases of police personnel being injured in the line of duty, Bihar ranks alongside states like Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising the challenges faced by law enforcement in the region.
