The professor had described the press briefings by Colonel Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as “optics,” adding that such displays must translate into real action to avoid being labeled as “hypocrisy.” His remarks sparked backlash, leading to legal action.

Haryana Women’s Commission Notice:

Earlier, the Haryana State Commission for Women had issued a notice based on suo motu cognizance of Mahmudabad’s remarks. The professor, however, defended himself, stating that his comments were misinterpreted. In a public statement on X, he emphasized his commitment to constitutional values and India’s integrity, citing his academic and policy work with government officials.

Ashoka University’s Response:

 

Ashoka University clarified that Mahmudabad’s statements were made in his personal capacity and do not reflect the institution’s views. The university stated it is cooperating with authorities while seeking more details about the case.
