SRINAGAR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Anantnag on Wednesday, a day after a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed several lives and left many wounded.

 

The visit came as part of the Centre’s immediate and high-level response to the tragedy that unfolded in one of Kashmir’s most frequented tourist zones.

 

According to senior officials, Shah first paid solemn respects to the slain tourists during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Police Control Room in Srinagar. He then proceeded to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, where he met the injured survivors, inquired about their treatment, and reassured them of the government’s unwavering support.

Shah’s visit followed his arrival in Srinagar on Tuesday, after being instructed directly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally oversee the situation and monitor the administration’s response on the ground.

 

Later in the day, the Home Minister presided over a high-level security huddle, attended by top brass from the Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, J&K Police, and other central and regional intelligence and enforcement bodies.

 

The discussions focused on dissecting the sequence of events surrounding the Pahalgam massacre and outlining a sharpened counter-terror strategy to prevent further civilian casualties.

 

Meanwhile, the security grid launched an intensive combing operation across the Baisaran forests, the area believed to be used by the attackers as their escape route. The hunt for the perpetrators continues, with reinforcements deployed and surveillance heightened.

 

The government’s response underscores the seriousness with which it views the attack, marking it as not just a tragedy but a national security concern demanding immediate and decisive action.
