NEW DELHI: Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and the Emir of Qatar in Doha has ignited a political storm amid heightened speculation over U.S. involvement in the India-Pakistan conflict. Ambani attended a state dinner hosted by the Emir of Qatar in honor of President Trump, marking his second meeting with Trump since the latter’s return to office in January 2025.

While no formal business discussions were scheduled, the gathering underscores Ambani’s strategic global relationships, particularly given Reliance Industries’ interests in sectors influenced by U.S. policies, such as crude oil imports and fuel exports.

The timing of Ambani’s engagement has drawn criticism, especially as the Indian government faces domestic scrutiny over President Trump’s recent claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Trump asserted that trade incentives offered by the U.S. played a role in facilitating the ceasefire, a claim the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has firmly denied, stating that trade was not discussed in talks between Indian and U.S. officials.

This assertion by Trump has been met with skepticism and concern within India, with opposition leaders questioning the government’s silence and urging a reaffirmation of India’s longstanding position that these bilateral issues between India and Pakistan are not subject to third-party mediation.

Ambani’s presence at the Doha event, therefore, is being viewed by some as politically sensitive, potentially signaling an alignment with U.S. narratives that are currently contentious within India. While most Indians are unhappy even as the Ministry of External Affairs has maintained silence over the mediation announcement by the U.S.

Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) has repeatedly stated in press conferences that Pakistan was begging for a ceasefire after suffering significant losses, further contradicting Trump’s claim of U.S. mediation.

Given Ambani’s significant influence and the strategic interests of Reliance Industries, his international engagements are closely watched and can have broader implications for India’s foreign relations and domestic political discourse.
