NEW DELHI: A 94-year-old woman was tragically killed in Iran on Sunday as the country came under heavy bombardment amid intensifying hostilities with Israel. The elderly civilian, identified by local sources as Zahra Karimi, lost her life when an Israeli airstrike struck a residential complex in southern Tehran, marking one of the first confirmed civilian casualties of advanced age since the outbreak of the latest conflict.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports from Iranian state media, the strike occurred just after sunrise, catching many residents off guard. Karimi, who lived alone in the ground-floor apartment of a low-rise building, was said to have been resting when a nearby weapons storage facility believed to be affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was hit. The resulting blast caused part of her building to collapse, burying her beneath the rubble.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but efforts to rescue her were in vain. “She was already gone when we pulled her out,” said a volunteer rescue worker, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The neighborhood is in shock. She was well known, kind, and had lived here her whole life.”
Iranian officials have condemned the strike, calling it part of a “deliberate campaign” targeting civilian areas under the guise of attacking military infrastructure. Tehran has vowed a “strong and proportionate response,” while also accusing Israel of attempting to spread panic and fear among the general population.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), however, maintained that all targets were “carefully chosen” based on intelligence assessments linking them to Iran’s nuclear weapons development and ballistic missile programs. They have not commented specifically on the incident involving the 94-year-old woman but reiterated that civilians had been warned to evacuate zones near known IRGC facilities.
The death of Zahra Karimi has stirred outrage and sorrow across Iranian social media, where users have shared her photos and stories from neighbors who remembered her as a survivor of past conflicts, including the Iran-Iraq War. Her passing has become a symbol of the rising toll the conflict is taking on ordinary citizens.
This tragic incident comes amid a deadly phase of escalation between Iran and Israel, marked by high-profile assassinations, missile strikes, and growing civilian risk. As international concern mounts, humanitarian agencies have called for an immediate de-escalation and for all parties to uphold the protection of civilians under international law.
Meanwhile, the Iranian government has begun organizing funerals for those killed in recent attacks, with Karimi’s memorial scheduled for later this week. State-run broadcasters are expected to televise the proceedings as a national tribute to victims of what Iranian leaders describe as “foreign aggression.”
With diplomatic efforts stalled and both nations continuing to exchange threats, the region stands on edge and for the families mourning innocent lives like that of Zahra Karimi, the cost of this war is already unbearably real.
