SRINAGAR: The 40-day-long harshest period of winter ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ begins in Kashmir today with temperatures across the Valley already settling several degrees below the freezing point.

The ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ is the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake here.

Meanwhile, the temperature across Kashmir stayed several degrees below freezing today.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night.
Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius, Anantnag saw the minimum temperature settled at minus 5.2 degrees Celsius and Kupwara recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius.

Leh town in Ladakh region had minus 11.9 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 9.4 degrees Celsius and Drass minus 11.9 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

Jammu city had 7.3 degrees Celsius, Katra 7.4 degrees Celsius, Batote 6.0 degrees Celsius, Bhaderwah 2.4 degrees Celsius and Banihal 7.6 degrees Celsius as the night’s lowest temperature
