NEW DELHI: The year 2024 is poised to be an unparalleled chapter in global politics, with national elections scheduled or expected in over 60 countries, encompassing almost half of the world’s population, promising political shifts and consequences that will resonate for years to come.

Asia-Pacific showdowns: Taiwan, India, and beyond

In the Asia-Pacific region, Taiwan, a self-governed island persistently threatened by Beijing, faces a pivotal moment in determining its next president. The results will shape the delicate relationship with China, potentially influencing regional dynamics.

India, the world’s largest democracy, prepares for its colossal election between April and May 2024. With over 900 million registered voters, the stakes are high as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks a third consecutive term.

Political turmoil: Bangladesh and Pakistan

However, not all elections are expected to unfold seamlessly. In Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina aims for a fourth consecutive term amidst a backdrop of political dissent and a boycotting opposition.

In Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the country’s most popular politician, faces incarceration and suppression of his party. The run-up to the February elections raises concerns about the fairness of the process and the state of democracy in the region.

Global power players: Russia and the United States:

Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, anticipates a seemingly certain re-election. However, the true breakdown of the March presidential election results could serve as a barometer for Putin’s support, especially amid the ongoing conflict that has drawn the world’s attention.

Meanwhile, the US, with more than 160 million registered voters, gears up for a consequential presidential race on November 5, 2024. Incumbent President Joe Biden seeks a second term, facing the potential challenge of former President Donald Trump’s bid for a second, non-consecutive term.

European Union’s transnational challenge

In the European Union, the June 2024 elections for the European Parliament stand as the world’s largest transnational election. With over 400 million voters across 27 member countries, this election will shape the future of the EU, influencing policies and alliances on a continental scale.

African crossroads: South Africa’s crucial vote

South Africa, in 2024, faces what experts suggest could be its most critical election in 30 years. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has held power since the end of apartheid in 1994.  Over 26 million South Africans are registered to vote, making their choices pivotal in determining the nation’s political landscape.

Beyond these key elections, nations like Indonesia, Iran, and others will contribute to 2024’s status as a record-breaking year. With the backdrop of war, economic uncertainties, and potential geopolitical risks, the outcomes of these elections will undoubtedly shape the course of global politics.
