NEW DELHI: Punjab is powering ahead in the clean energy sector under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership. In a major green milestone, Nabha Power Limited (NPL) has announced a ₹641 crore hybrid power project in Rajpura, Patiala, combining solar energy with its existing 1,400 MW thermal plant.

The project—backed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T)—will cut carbon emissions by 15%, create 500 jobs for local youth, and ensure 24×7 affordable electricity for the state. The initiative will run under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), with work starting in December 2025 and completing in 2026.

Rajpura’s plant already supplies 40% of Punjab’s power in the non-peak season and 20% in peak season. The solar integration will further enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. In recognition of its eco-friendly commitment, NPL recently received an award from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

Punjab’s clean energy expansion doesn’t stop there. The government is developing 66 new solar plants to generate 264 MW of electricity and investing ₹1,056 crore, creating over 500 jobs. The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) is also partnering with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to produce green hydrogen from paddy straw, while canal-top and rooftop solar projects are already saving water and generating millions of clean power units annually.

Clean Energy Minister Aman Arora hailed the Nabha Power project as “a big step in Punjab’s green revolution,” while CM Bhagwant Mann called it “a symbol of prosperity for every Punjabi.”

“This project is our promise of a clean, prosperous, and self-reliant Punjab,” Mann said, adding that the state is on track to become India’s green engine—a model for sustainability, employment, and renewable innovation.
