New Delhi: US Vice President JD Vance landed in India on Monday for a four-day official visit, marking his first trip to the country since assuming office. Accompanied by his wife Usha Vance and their three children—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel—the high-level delegation was welcomed at the Palam Air Force Station by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Defence and Trade on the Agenda:
The visit comes amid ongoing negotiations between India and the US on a bilateral trade agreement, with discussions expected to focus on tariffs and market access. Additionally, defence cooperation is set to take center stage, with Vance likely to push for India’s procurement of American military equipment, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stryker infantry combat vehicles.

Sources indicate that both nations are working towards finalizing a defence partnership framework this year, building on the joint statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in February. Further discussions on defence deals are expected during US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s upcoming visit to India in the coming months.

Cultural Visit to Akshardham Temple:
After a ceremonial Guard of Honour upon arrival, the Vance family visited Delhi’s iconic Akshardham Temple. The US Vice President and his family are staying at the ITC Maurya Sheraton, a luxury hotel frequented by global dignitaries. Later tonight, they are scheduled to travel to Jaipur, where they will reside at the historic Rambagh Palace, a former royal residence now managed by Taj Hotels.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties:
The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and the US, with defence, trade, and technology collaborations being key focus areas. Official talks between Vice President Vance and PM Modi are expected to further solidify bilateral relations.
