MUMBAI: In a startling revelation made by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the Maharashtra Assembly, it has come to light that Uddhav Thackeray, during his tenure as Chief Minister, refused permission for a statue of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Borivali. This revelation has sparked controversy and shed light on the contrasting approaches of political leaders towards honoring eminent figures.

“During my time as the Deputy CM of Maharashtra, an example came to my attention. A statue of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was brought to me from the constituency of BJP MP Gopal Shetty,” said Ajit Pawar.

“In response, I organized a meeting with Uddhav and Fadnavis, both of whom were present via video conference. As the Deputy CM, I agreed and proposed giving permission for the statue. However, I regret that some individuals still opposed granting permission for people like Vajpayee. Vajpayee, much like Bahadur Shastri, was a respected figure with a remarkable personality,” he added.

He also spoke about the denial of permission for the construction of the Olympic Bhavan in Pune during MVA’s rule under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray.

“Then, another issue arose regarding the Olympic Bhawan. It was not a matter of personal interest or private ownership but belonged to Maharashtra and the government. Despite granting all necessary permissions, certain obstacles were raised,” he said.

Targeting his former allies, he said, “it is essential to avoid such actions in the future. To expect a positive response from others, we must also introspect within ourselves.”

Even as the video clip was shared, many social media users pointed out that the BJP-led government did not discriminate against icons of the Sena as Devendra Fadnavis, during his time as CM, swiftly granted all necessary permissions for a memorial of Balasaheb Thackeray. Critics have pointed to Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership style, described as “narrow-minded” by some.

Many critics expressed their disappointment at the glaring disparity in the treatment of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s memory. Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister, a Bharat Ratna awardee, was a respected and statesmanlike figure, revered across party lines for putting the nation’s interests above petty politics.
