NEW DELHI: While global celebrities dazzled in couture gowns and high-end luxury wear, Indian actress Ruchi Gujjar made a bold cultural statement at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, blending tradition with tribute in a look that sparked conversation across continents.
Walking the red carpet in a gold lehenga designed by Roopa Sharmaa, Gujjar stood out not only for her sartorial elegance but for a distinctive centerpiece—a custom necklace bearing the likeness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Crafted using age-old Meenakari and Kundan techniques by Rajasthani artisans, the necklace quickly became a talking point both on and off the red carpet.
“This necklace isn’t just an accessory—it’s a tribute to vision, strength, and India’s global ascent,” said Ruchi Gujjar in a statement. “Wearing it at Cannes was my way of honouring a leader who has transformed India’s presence on the world stage.”
Her lehenga, rich in mirror work, Gota Patti, and intricate Zardozi embroidery, drew inspiration from the famed craftsmanship of Jaipur. The outfit took over 800 hours to complete, involving artisans from Bagru and Sanganer, renowned for preserving Rajasthan’s textile heritage.

Adding emotional depth to her attire, Ruchi draped a handcrafted Bandhani dupatta, created by Ram from the Zaribari artisan collective, featuring delicate Zardozi and Gota Patti detailing.
“It felt like I was carrying the spirit of Rajasthan with me,” Ruchi shared. “Every stitch spoke of my roots.”
Completing her regal look were coordinated earrings, a maang tikka, ethnic bangles, and red alta adorning her hands—a symbolic nod to Indian femininity and ritual.
The international response was swift. Fashion critics described her ensemble as a “cultural masterstroke” and “one of the most original looks at Cannes this year.” On social media, her images went viral, clocking over 2 million views within 24 hours.
