New Delhi: Team India beat Pakistan by 6 runs at the T20 World Cup 2024 in New York on June 9. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India made history by successfully defending a modest target of 120 runs against Pakistan. The team limited Pakistan to 113/7 in 20 overs, marking the lowest-ever target defended in the tournament’s history.

This achievement parallels Sri Lanka’s record from the 2014 T20 World Cup, where they defended 120 runs against New Zealand, dismissing them for just 60 runs.

In a thrilling match yesterday, team India experienced a mid-innings collapse on a challenging pitch, resulting in them being dismissed for a disappointing 119 runs in 19 overs. This occurred despite a resilient performance from Rishabh Pant, who scored 42 runs off 31 balls, after being asked to bat first in overcast conditions.

The Indian bowlers delivered an outstanding performance, aiding the Men in Blue in successfully defending their total of 119 runs at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya played pivotal roles in securing a victory for India, despite their own precarious situation earlier in the match. Together, they claimed five wickets while conceding only 38 runs in 8 overs.

Pakistan, known for their ability to alternate between brilliance and inconsistency, earlier appeared to be in a commanding position in the game, requiring 48 runs from 48 balls with eight wickets remaining. From there the dynamic duo of Bumrah, who took 3 wickets for 14 runs, and Hardik Pandya, who claimed 2 wickets for 24 runs, revived India’s hopes with their impactful bowling performances. This led to Pakistan losing wickets rapidly, eventually finishing at 113 for seven in 20 overs.

Pakistan team suffered another loss on the field facing a packed crowd of 34,000 spectators. Pakistan will now have to win against Canada and Ireland by big margins and hope that the USA don’t beat either Ireland or India to enter the Super Eight.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 started on June 2 and is scheduled to end on June 28.
