NEW DELHI: Indian security forces have eliminated key terror hubs in Pakistan’s Punjab province, including Markaz Taiba, the infamous headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Muridke. The strikes were carried out at night, focusing only on jihadi infrastructure while deliberately sparing Pakistan’s official military installations.
Here’s why these locations were chosen—and why the timing and precision matter.
Why India Targeted Markaz Taiba
Markaz Taiba isn’t just a campus—it is the nerve center of Lashkar-e-Taiba’s ideology, training, recruitment, and strategy. Spread across 82 acres in Nangal Sahdan, Muridke, this complex has:
- A madrassa, indoctrination centers (Sufa Academy), training facilities, residential areas, market, fish farms, and sports grounds.
- Over 1000 radical students enrolled annually.
- Was used to train the 26/11 Mumbai attackers, including Ajmal Kasab, with planning inputs from global conspirators like David Headley and Tahawwur Rana.
- Funded in part by Osama bin Laden, who donated ₹1 crore for building a mosque and guest house inside the complex in 2000.
- Continues to operate openly, despite being designated a terror organization by the UN, US, UK, EU, India, and others.
This facility is not merely symbolic—it is operational, strategic, and doctrinal. It trains and dispatches radicalized terrorists for cross-border attacks in India, especially in Kashmir.
Who Were the Targets: Terror Commanders Inside
The strike reportedly focused on neutralizing high-value LeT operatives and ideologues present at Markaz Taiba at the time:
- Amir Hamza, key LeT/JuD/PMML ideologue, was delivering jihadi sermons encouraging armed struggle.
- Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, 26/11 mastermind and strategic planner.
- Talha Saeed, son of Hafiz Saeed, who led funeral prayers for top LeT leader Abdul Rehman Makki in Dec 2024.
- Khubaib, Isa, Qasim – top LeT field commanders known for Kashmir operations.
- Multiple foreign trainees and Pakistani cadres were reportedly present for Ramadan-based indoctrination sessions.
The strike aimed to disrupt LeT’s leadership pipeline and prevent future large-scale attacks on Indian soil.
Why the Attack Was Carried Out at Night
Night strikes offered maximum tactical advantage:
- Reduced civilian casualties – Civilians residing nearby were indoors or away from open movement, reducing collateral damage.
- Element of surprise – Avoided interception by Pakistan’s radar or early-warning systems.
- Operational clarity – Indian intelligence had clear visuals and human intelligence on the presence of terror commanders at night prayers and meetings, particularly during Ramadan’s Taraweeh and Itikaf gatherings.
- International optics – A night strike on a terror facility, not civilian areas or military zones, made India’s operation legally justifiable under the doctrine of preemptive self-defense.
Why India Didn’t Target Pakistan’s Military Establishments
India intentionally avoided striking Pakistani military bases for several critical reasons:
- Avoiding escalation: Targeting Pakistan Army or Air Force bases would be seen as an act of war, inviting open retaliation and risking a regional conflict.
- Clear messaging: The strikes were a punitive counter-terror operation, not a war declaration. India’s message was to Islamabad: “Terror and state cannot hide under the same roof.”
- Separating terror from the state (diplomatically): By avoiding official military infrastructure, India aimed to isolate Pakistan’s global credibility by showing it protects terror while the Indian side uses surgical means to neutralize threats.
- Global support: The operation aligns with international counter-terror doctrines, ensuring that India retains diplomatic backing and doesn’t violate Geneva Conventions or UNSC resolutions.
Recent Activity Justifying the Strike
Even in 2025, LeT and its political front PMML have openly hosted jihadi gatherings:
- Funeral of Hafiz Abdul Rehman Makki in Dec 2024 saw the attendance of senior LeT figures and public glorification of jihad.
- Friday sermons and solidarity conferences in March and December 2024 promoted jihad against India, Israel, and the US.
- Ramadan prayers at Markaz Taiba have become rallying points for radical cadres.
Despite repeated international bans, Pakistan has continued to allow LeT’s activities under state protection.
Strategic Shift in Indian Counter-Terror Doctrine
This strike signals a shift from post-attack retaliation to pre-emptive neutralization of terror ecosystems:
- Markaz Taiba’s destruction is not symbolic, but an attempt to cut off the ideological head and recruitment engine of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
- It sends a clear signal: terror hubs, not civilian areas or state institutions, are India’s precise targets.
India’s nighttime strike on Markaz Taiba is a calibrated act of self-defense, shaped by intelligence precision, strategic restraint, and international legality. It underlines India’s evolving doctrine: terror facilities will no longer be tolerated, regardless of which border they hide behind.
