NEW DELHI: NCP chief and MP Sharad Pawar writes to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, requesting an urgent inquiry into the recent Parliament Security Breach and suspension of MPs, expressing his lament over the large-scale suspensions.

“The decision to suspend Members of Parliament seeking an explanation for this incident seems counterintuitive to the principals of accountability and transparency. Members of Parliament have a legitimate right to seek clarification and ensure the safety of the parliamentary environment,” Pawar wrote.

He emphasised that the MPs’ protests reflected the “severity of the incident,” and MPs naturally sought clarification. He criticized the government for not providing a statement on how it plans to address the issue and expressed disappointment over the suspension of members seeking an explanation or statement.

Pawar also highlighted that some MPs, who were not continuously disruptive, had been thrown out of Parliament for the remainder of this session, the final full sitting before next year’s general election.

Parliament’s shocking move to suspend 78 MPs on Monday, in addition to the 14 ejected last week, drew attention. The suspended MPs included Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi, Congress’ top two leaders in the House, and Trinamool’s Kalyan Banerjee, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and Saugata Ray, along with A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran of Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK.

From the Rajya Sabha, the suspended MPs included Congress’ Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, DMK’s Kanimozhi, and RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha. The record suspensions continued on Tuesday, with 48 more MPs suspended from the Lok Sabha.
