Semiconductors, jet engines, space cooperation, drones: What’s on PM Modi-President Biden’s plate

WASHINGTON, DC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden are scheduled to hold a crucial meeting in Washington, DC, today, during which they will engage in discussions covering various important topics.

One of the key areas of focus will be a potential investment by the United States of up to ₹10,000 crore ($1.3 billion) in the Indian semiconductor industry. This move aims to reduce America’s dependence on China for critical components and simultaneously create employment opportunities while enhancing India’s technological capabilities.

Another significant topic on the agenda is a deal for jet engines, as India seeks to procure engines from the US for its Tejas fighter jets. This deal could potentially be valued at around US$1 billion and would contribute to bolstering India’s defence capabilities.

In an exciting development, India plans to send its first astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024. The selected astronaut will be from the Indian Air Force, marking a significant milestone for India’s space exploration program.

Additionally, the two leaders are expected to announce the opening of new consulates in each other’s countries, further strengthening diplomatic ties and facilitating increased trade and travel.

The meeting will also address the renewal of H1-B visas, which is of great significance to Indian IT professionals working in the United States. The potential extension of visa validity for up to three years would provide greater stability and ease for Indian professionals in the US job market.

Furthermore, discussions will take place regarding the potential sale of MQ9B drones by the US to India. These drones are primarily used for surveillance and strike missions and could amount to a significant deal worth up to US$3.1 billion.

The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden is expected to be highly productive, with both leaders engaging in comprehensive discussions and aiming to reach agreements that benefit both countries.

Apart from the aforementioned topics, they will also address the situation in Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific region, climate change, trade and investment, as well as education and cultural cooperation.

This meeting represents a significant opportunity for India and the US to strengthen their strategic partnership and address common challenges.
