JAMMU: J&K Peoples Conference Chief and MLA Sajad Gani Lone on Monday criticized the existing reservation framework in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a “delayed recipe for disaster” that marginalizes Kashmiris.
Speaking in the Assembly, Lone, who represents the Handwara constituency, expressed concern that the ethnic Kashmiri-speaking population is being systematically sidelined.
Kashmiris Losing Out in Competitive Exams
“We are witnessing a sharp decline in the number of Kashmiris qualifying for competitive exams. This is not due to a lack of ability but because they are being edged out of the selection process through reservation policies,” he asserted.
Citing data from Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) recruitments over the past three years, Lone claimed that these policies have created an uneven playing field, restricting opportunities for the local population.
Warning of Long-Term Consequences
Lone warned that the current system is paving the way for social and administrative dominance over Kashmiris through disempowerment.
“If this trend continues, how many Kashmiris will you see in the civil secretariat two decades from now?” he questioned, underscoring the long-term impact on governance representation.
A “Post-Dated Cheque for Disaster”
He cautioned that the reservation system, if left unaddressed, could have severe consequences for the region’s stability.
“This is nothing short of a post-dated cheque for disaster. We have just emerged from three decades of conflict—one scripted by our adversaries. Now, we are scripting a new crisis ourselves,” he remarked.
Lone further pointed out that even Kashmir’s tribal communities are unable to benefit from these reservations due to their socio-economic disadvantages.
Call for Policy Reform
Urging the administration to address the issue, he called upon the government to revise the existing policy to ensure fairness and inclusivity in recruitment and governance.
His remarks have reignited the debate on the reservation system in Jammu and Kashmir, with growing calls for a review of its impact on different sections of society.
