Sagarika Ghose’s Rajya Sabha affidavit reveals Rajdeep Sardesai’s massive income

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress (TMC) recently nominated journalist Sagarika Ghose, wife of TV journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in West Bengal, however, the spotlight is on the substantial wealth laid bare in their election affidavit.

Rajdeep’s income, according to the affidavit, ran in crores, even during the COVID pandemic. As the details unfold, it becomes evident that the power couple’s financial canvas is nothing short of staggering.

The announcement of Ghose joining TMC was made via a tweet. In the tweet, the Mamata Banerjee-led-party wrote, “We are pleased to announce the candidature of @sagarikaghose, @SushmitaDevAITC, @MdNadimulHaque6, and Mamata Bala Thakur for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections.”

As part of the Rajya Sabha nomination process, Sagarika Ghose was required to disclose her and her husband Rajdeep Sardesai’s financial details in an affidavit. The revealed information sheds light on their income, assets, and investments.

According to Sagarika Ghose’s affidavit, her income in 2019 was around Rs 40 lakhs. The challenging year of 2021 saw a significant drop to Rs 10 lakhs, followed by a rebound to Rs 17 lakhs in 2023. In parallel, Rajdeep Sardesai’s earnings amounted to Rs 4.55 crores in 2019. The COVID years witnessed a decline to Rs 2.83 crores, with a subsequent rise to Rs 3.54 crores in 2023.

Income tax details for the financial year 2022-23 disclosed the total income to be Rs 17.18 lakhs for Sagarika Ghose and Rs 3.54 crores for Rajdeep Sardesai. The latter’s overall earnings, primarily from his role as an anchor at India Today Group, lead to speculation about the source of a significant portion of his income.

Revelations about Sagarika Ghose’s financial holdings include her continued ownership of shares in TV 18, valued at Rs 7.73 lakhs. The couple, notably, has no outstanding loans or dues from government, banks, or individuals.

The affidavit exposes that Rajdeep Sardesai has invested nearly Rs 25 crores in mutual funds, stocks, and bonds. Their 2008-acquired residence in Panchsheel Park, New Delhi, initially worth approximately Rs 25 crores, now boasts an estimated paper value of around Rs 49 crores, registered under Sagarika Ghose’s name.

Sagarika’s immovable assets stand at Rs 49 crores, with movable assets at Rs 3 crores. In contrast, Rajdeep’s movable assets are valued at Rs 24.87 crores. The couple’s mutual funds reveal Rajdeep’s holdings at Rs 6.14 crores, while Sagarika’s are at Rs 3.23 crores as the current market value.

In terms of vehicles, Sagarika owns a CITY 1.5 VMT I-VTEC, 2015, valued at Rs. 4.43 lakhs, and a Toyota Corolla, 2018, valued at Rs 9.17 lakhs. Surprisingly, spouse Rajdeep Sardesai does not own any vehicles.
