NEW DELHI: The recent floods in Fazilka district have devastated rural communities, submerging 12 villages and 20 panchayats, damaging standing crops, homes, and roads. Acting on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s directions, the Punjab government, along with social organizations, has intensified relief and rehabilitation measures to support affected families.
Local MLA Narinder Pal Singh has been on the ground, coordinating with the administration and ensuring timely assistance. Punjab Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond also visited the flood-hit areas, distributing relief material, food packets, medicines, and other essentials. Interacting with residents, he assured continued government support and personally supervised rescue and relief operations.
Health services have been prioritized to prevent post-flood disease outbreaks. Eight round-the-clock medical teams have been deployed across villages, while 26 additional teams have been stationed at relief camps. These efforts have already saved lives in critical situations, including wall collapse injuries, an electrocution case, and a child who slipped into floodwaters. Four women safely delivered babies during the floods, with medical teams ensuring both mothers and newborns remain safe, including one at the Slemepur relief camp.
Delivering supplies to submerged villages was another challenge, but the administration managed to provide relief to nearly 3,800 families in a single distribution round, ensuring access to food and essential support.
Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond’s role drew wide appreciation as he mobilized local youth, boosted relief operations, and reassured families in crisis. His efforts, combined with those of the administration and social workers, have brought much-needed relief to Fazilka.
The government has pledged both immediate aid and long-term rehabilitation for flood victims. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, while relief camps remain active.
The Fazilka experience underscores how government action, strengthened by community participation, can help people withstand and recover from natural disasters. As relief reaches affected families, residents are slowly returning to normalcy, hopeful of rebuilding their lives after the devastation.
