NEW DELHI: Latika Dikshit, the daughter of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, expressed her belief in the victory of her brother, Sandeep Dikshit, who is contesting from the New Delhi constituency.
“Of course, I want him to win, and I think he will win,” she told The New Indian outside the polling booth on Wednesday.
Regarding the possibility of Congress winning the election, Latika highlighted pressing concerns that Delhi has been facing under the Aam Aadmi Party’s government.
“Delhi has really suffered in the last ten years at the hands of the AAP government. There’s been a complete collapse of governance—air pollution, dirty water, health and hygiene issues, sewage systems, traffic management, public transport, and more. We need to bring the city back on track for development, the way it was in Sheila ji’s time,” she emphasized.
She also criticized the state of public health, mentioning that many government hospitals lacked basic facilities like ultrasound machines and sufficient medical staff.
When asked about the possibility of Sandeep being nominated as Delhi Chief Minister in case of a Congress win, Latika stated, “That is for the party to decide. Our job is to win and bring the Congress message to the people.”
She also addressed the hypothetical scenario of a divided vote and the possibility of a post-election alliance with the AAP. “That is for the party high command to decide,” she remarked.
When asked about other Congress leaders who had cast their vote, Latika confirmed that Rahul Gandhi had voted, and clarified that Sandeep cast his vote earlier at Nizamuddin.
She also mentioned that she was present at the polling station to greet and accompany Sonia Gandhi, who was expected to cast her vote soon.
Expressing her concern about the slow voter turnout, Latika urged Delhiites to come out in large numbers and cast their vote. “This is the most important day for Indian democracy, the day we cast our vote. I wish more people would come out and vote,” she stated.
In her final message to the voters, Latika urged them to participate actively in the electoral process. “Please come out and vote. Don’t sit at home. Make your vote count—for development, progress, and the community’s good. Vote for a better Delhi,” she concluded.
Delhi voted on Wednesday, in a single phase for all 70 constituencies, with prominent Congress leaders casting their votes from Nirman Bhawan.
