NEW DELHI: Raghav Chadha of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) praised the Centre for launching the ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’ at Chennai Airport.  ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’ is an affordable eatery following a similar outlet at Kolkata Airport a few months ago.

Earlier Chadha had raised concerns over overpriced food and beverages at airports in the Parliament.

He highlighted this issue during the discussion on the Indian Aviation Bill 2024 in the Winter Session of Parliament last year.

Sharing a video clip of his speech on social media, Chadha wrote, “A small spark can light up the darkest skies… First Kolkata, now Chennai!”

He expressed gratitude to those who supported his demand. He also promised to continue raising public interest issues. “Keep sending me your suggestions,” he added.

In Parliament, Chadha questioned high airport food prices. “A water bottle costs ₹100, and tea is priced at ₹200-250. Can’t the government establish affordable canteens at airports?” he had asked.

He also criticized poor airport management. He pointed out issues like long queues, overcrowding, and disorganization.

In December, the civil aviation ministry launched the first ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’ in Kolkata as a pilot project. Chadha called it a “positive step.”

“Finally, the government has heard the voice of the common man. While the initiative begins with Kolkata Airport, I hope it is extended to all airports nationwide,” he said.

The ministry announced that if successful, more such cafes would open across India. The outlets offer essentials like water, tea, coffee, and snacks at reasonable prices.

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu inaugurated the Kolkata cafe. The event marked 100 years of the city’s airport.

Chadha’s demand for affordable airport food has gained traction. With Kolkata and Chennai adopting the initiative, more airports may follow soon.
