KOLKATA: As the dates of West Bengal panchayat elections come nearer, West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Congress have joined hands to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Speaking at the culmination of the party’s Jana Sanjog Yatra in Kakdwip, CM Banerjee said, “They are seeking central forces for panchayat elections. These Raam (BJP)-Baam (CPI-M)-Shyam (Congress) have joined hands. They are hellbent on defeating TMC.”

Targeting Congress, which is playing an active role in uniting the opposition ahead of the 2024 general elections against the BJP and against TMC at the state level, the TMC supremo said, “Congress, which is claiming high moral ground, seeks our support in the Centre but is busy fighting us in our state.”

Questioning the deployment of the central force as ordered by the high court, Banerjee asked why the central forces were not going to Manipur, where a minister’s house was set on fire and over 150 dead.

“Over 49 people died in 2013 when central forces conducted the elections. In 2008, 36 people died. In Sitalkuchi, the BSF killed four minorities and one Rajbangshi youth. Even yesterday, Rajbanshi youth Gautam Barma was killed by the BSF. How many central teams have been sent there?” CM Banerjee said.

The state government had filed a review petition in the Calcutta high court opposing the deployment of central forces for the panchayat poll. The TMC-ruled West Bengal government is also exploring the possibility of getting armed forces from other states rather than central forces.

While the BJP is seeking legal and central government help after alleged TMC workers prevented party candidates from filing nominations for the panchayat election, CM Banerjee said, “Over 1.5 lakh nominations have been filed by Opposition parties alone, yet you are claiming that they weren’t able to file nominations. Isn’t this ironic?

The polling for approximately 75,000 seats in the three-tier Panchayati Raj system, which includes Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis and Gram Panchayats, is scheduled for July 8.
